Green Gift

Give the gift of Green

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to live a greener life. I’ve got a few friends with upcoming birthdays for March/April and wanted to go green with their gifts. Believe it or not, there are a lot of gifts to choose from. So why not tell someone you love them and the planet?

Here’s a cheap and inexpensive way to wrap the present: use a left over paper bag from the grocery store and add a green bow for the theme.

Any other ideas? Going green is the way to go!

Need a better way to manage your money? Quicken has a great tool, Mint.com, a free application that you can use to manage your money. It’s a great website because you can use Mint.com to maintain all of your financial accounts (credit cards, stocks, savings, etc). I’ve set up my Mint account to have monthly budgets and you can see the breakdown of your spending habits. It’s really changed the way I spend. You can even set up your account to notify you when you go over your budgets and they can send you text messages.

If you’re worried about hackers, don’t worry about people getting your financial information. Mint.com provides bank-level security by signing in anonymously.  You can not move any money, it’s a read-only service.

Try it out to save and go green!

The Responsible Pet Owner…

Don't forget your baggy when you go out!

Don't forget your baggy when you go out!

Everyone should be doing it. The question is: are you doing it? Give into the peer pressure, and pick up after your pet. It’s one of the things pet owners ignore, but we’re asking you to do it.

Do you enjoy stepping on gum? It’s the same feeling when you step in a pet’s waste.  Think of your neighbors when you take your pets out. Not only is it necessary, it’s also healthy for you. Viruses, bacteria, and parasites  can spread and the waste creates a nasty odor.

Things to remember:

  • Golden Rule:  Treat others the way you wish to be treated!
  • Do-it-Yourself: Pick up your animal’s waste
  • You can help keep down the amount of illnesses
  • Use Flushable bags: A bag that breaks down any wastes and won’t affect your plumbing

We love your pets, but we also love our property. Help us take care of Watkins Station and please remember to clean up after your pets!

Reuse Everything As Much As Possible

recycle eyeWatkins Station, I found an article on earth911.com that can help you to reuse almost everything.  Read their article here:

Reuse is simply the act of finding a second (or third, or tenth or hundredth) use for a product to prolong its life.  Reuse is an important step after you’ve already reduced, but before you are ready to recycle.

Reuse is a process that many of us already implement in our everyday lives without realizing it. Any time you buy or sell a product second-hand, such as from Craigslist, eBay or Goodwill, you are providing an additional use for this product, while at the same time, not requiring another one to be created.

The important thing to consider when you want to reuse is that “creativity is king” in the process. The creativity also provides the opportunity to be thrifty, by reusing what you already have for new, innovative purposes.

Recycling A Widely Used Product

As one of the hardest items to recycle, aluminum foil is a widely used household product that most people tend to throw away right after use.  Because we use it to cook, grill, and wrap food it is usually dirty after its first use.

Thousands of tons of aluminum foil make it to our landfills every year.  What we don’t realize is aluminum foil is 100% recyclable.  It is extremely durable can be reused multiple times.  Even though it is often dirtier and harder to recycle, it takes 95% less energy to make aluminum from recycled aluminum versus using virgin materials.

Before reading the article, I always threw away my aluminum foil.  How do you dispose of aluminum foil?

Reuse Your iPod

A new iPod is on the way, and everybody loves the latest and greatest. Or maybe that first-generation click-wheeler you bought finally gave up the ghost, and you want to upgrade to a tiny little MP3 player.

If you’re like me, you might have a drawer full of old iPods at home (honest, some were gifts!). What can you do with them?

If the device is still functional, try giving it away. If friends and family are all set with MP3 players, offer it to your local Freecycle group and someone will surely pick it up.

Going Green To Create Jobs

capitalI am very confused about how the bill to curb carbon emissions will affect the employment of many.

TV ads by a business group says if this bill is enacted then it will cost 2.4 million U.S. jobs which contradicts President Obama who says the bill will create 1.7 million jobs.

Who do you believe?

I know you have a ton of Sunday papers around the house. Don’t throw them a way, make a basket out of them.

Hey, there was a table made from magazines, so you can surely make a basket from newspaper and it is cute, too.
