Labor Day. I would have to say that my favorite tradition here in Gaithersburg is the Labor Day Parade. This parade has continued on for seven decades, this year marks the 72nd Labor Day Parade!

This Monday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. you can catch the Labor Day Parade of Gaithersburg!  The event is FREE and will start at the Summit and Diamond Avenues!

The parade, which will feature an assortment of fire engines, high school marching bands, large balloons, horses, clowns, and more, will wind through the streets of Olde Towne Gaithersburg, including East Diamond and Russell Avenues.  Master of ceremonies will be Julie Wright, traffic reporter for WTOP News Radio and part of the Fox 5 Morning News team.

Come out and celebrate your Labor Day with a parade!

Running with(out) Shoes!

August 11, 2010 by Alicia

Being a runner always requires a lot…mentally and physically. Some would go as far to say that to be a runner you need to be somewhat insane. People always ask me…who runs for 10 miles at once? They say I have to be insane…but really when I run it’s the time I give to myself. I take that time to think over things and to relax. I know…I know how do you relax.

When I run, I run in my Vibram Five Fingers. What’s Vibram Five Fingers?? Only the best movement in running! Basically you’re running barefoot! I know, you have the question…”who would run barefoot?” You’ll typically think that running barefoot would be horrible…it lacks arch support…cushion…etc. Wrong…running barefoot is good for you.

The typical human foot is an anatomical marvel of evolution with 26 bones, 33 joints, 20 muscles, and hundreds of sensory receptors, tendons and ligaments. Like the rest of the body, to keep our feet healthy, they need to be stimulated and exercised.

They look like gloves for your feet! When you run in Vibram Five Fingers your feet become stronger!  Your feet begin to support you and wearing shoes won’t ever be the same.

You can either buy Vibram Five Fingers online or at Fleet Feet Gaithersburg . Watkins Station is less than 15 minutes away from Fleet Feet Gaithersburg. Check them out!

When I think of watching a UFC Fight (Ultimate Fighting Championship) at a bar with my friends, I only think of one place and that’s Buffalo Wings and Beer. The name of the restaurant is a great combination but when you add a UFC fight it’s an even better combination!

This Saturday, August 7th at 10:00 p.m. you can catch the Silva versus Sonnen fight! Bring some friends and a great attitude and you’ll be in for a great time!!

Why do you live in Gaithersburg, MD? Living here in Gaithersburg is great, the commute to D.C. isn’t too bad and the people are very hospitable. Others that don’t live in our great city might begin asking you why you like living here. Why? Because CNN thinks Gaithersburg, MD is one of the best places to live.

Money Magazine of CNNMoney came out with their list of Top 100 Best places to live and Gaithersburg, MD is number 25! We’re living at Watkins Station which is already a great community and now we live in one of the best places!!

Here are some of the reasons why you live in one of the best places!

  • Gaithersburg attracts start up companies and this ability has helped this town out of the recession that America faces.
  • Only being an hour ride (train and car) from Washington D.C.
  • Large employers include: Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman

Romeo and Juliet by Baz LurmanLooking for something to do this weekend residents of Watkins Station? Well we’ve got plans for you!  Tomorrow night and Saturday night (July 9-10) at 8:00 p.m. you have the opportunity to sit out under the stars and watch Shakespeare’s Tragic Love s Story, “Romeo and Juliet.” This event is free to everyone, all you have to bring is yourself and a blanket to sit on at the City Hall Concert Pavilion.

Before the show on Friday you can be entertained with crafts, art and flea market vendors at the Market in Olde Towne. This event is  held every Friday through Sept. 3, 2010.  If it rains, the rescheduled date is Sunday July 11 at 4:00 p.m.

I was always attracted to the story of Romeo and Juliet and when I think of it now so many movies, books and plays have been modeled after this great story. It’s truly a great tale to tell.

For more information please call 301-258-6350 or email parksrec@gaithersburgmd.gov

The City Hall Concert Pavillion is located off of 31 S Summit Ave.

It’s a party time! The city of Gaithersburg is prepping for the 4th of July celebration this weekend. 97.1 and Montgomery County Agricultural Center is putting on the best fireworks show at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Spend a day and enjoy an evening filled with music and patriotic fireworks! Gather your picnic supplies and blanket for the party. On Independence Day, you’ll enjoy a 2 hour concert with the band, Appaloosa followed by a fireworks display!

If we get rain on Sunday, the show will be postponed to July 5th. The park opens at 5 PM and the Mayor will give a speech at 8 PM. Fireworks will launch at dusk.

Are you going to watch the fireworks?
